Of course, reviews and economy do make a difference – but at the end of the day it is your experience and personal preference that decides what you actually go out and buy.

Having owned a rather well-used Dodge Nitro, my mate wanted to upgrade to an Avenger. I think he was attracted by the much sportier shape, and the fact that he was likely to have much more fun in this that the Nitro. It is also the first car he has bought himself, rather than been given by his parents. He even won one in a competition once – lucky guy! All this means that he desperately wants to own his very own fancy and slightly exotic car now that the time has come – you could say that he is overcompensating somewhat!

The Avenger, despite my teasing, is actually a car worth being envious of. It looks incredibly muscular and powerful, especially with that famous cross hair grille and mean lean shape. The engine also lives up to expectations, kitted out as it is with a 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine that manages to deliver an impressive 45.6 mpg on the combined fuel cycle. Not bad for an American Muscle car, eh?! This may not be the Dodge Challenger, but it is certainly the next best thing.

As we started on the search with serious intentions, we quickly realised that my friend would be happier buying a used Dodge than spending so much more on a brand new one., After all, the differences were minimal, and at the very least you saved the VAT costs. We did a thorough search of local used Dodge dealership, private listings, and popped online to do research and find the perfect car. As it happened, the best one we found, a smart 07 model, was a complete bargain from a reasonably local dealer that we actually found searching for “used Dodge” on the internet!

A month later, and quite a few test drives down the line, my mate has his very own smart Dodge Avenger, and he hasn’t stopped going on about how great it is since!

Used BMW - Choosing an Efficient Car

I don’t know about you, but I find all the different varieties of efficient cars on the market a little bit confusing. It isn’t the basic concept – I understand the important of miles per gallon, I understand what is good and what is bad, I am even starting to understand CO2 emissions levels – but something keeps stopping me from understanding it all fully.

That something may well be the sheer range on the market. There are hundreds if not thousands of difference models, each with a unique set of stats regarding how economical they are. Even worse, every single car seems to use a different set of words to represent their most economical engines – SXI, CDTi, sports versions, green versions, hybrids and electric models. Keeping on top of which is good and which is bad is, quite frankly, something of a challenge.

Of course, looks have to be involved – much like saying you love someone entirely for their personality, it is unlikely to be completely accurate! Economy has to be one element of picking a car, but only one – you still need to remember all the facts about drive, speed, power, torque – and with such a huge collection of figures and information you could be forgiven for getting totally bamboozled.

One of my top tips for choosing an efficient car effectively and still with an element of passion, is to focus on a few brands rather than the entire market. Do a bit of research (asking around friends, reading reviews and what not), and choose some brands who generally produce cars you love the look of and that you love the way they drive. Personally I narrowed it down to a few brands, and then looked a little deeper into each one.

One of my favourite brands was BMW, who as you know produce an extensive range of cars, some of which are more efficient than others. I already knew I needed a small car, preferably from their one series, so the likelihood of them being economical was higher than with massive huge engined cars. That said, never assume that a smaller engine means a more economical engine. Quite often brands will only put their fancy technology on the slightly higher spec models, meaning that a 2.0 litre can often be more efficient than a 1.4 litre! Odd, eh?!

BMW call their efficiency technology BMWEfficientDynamics, and their 1 Series hatchbacks tend to be equipped with it throughout, probably to meet with certain governmental green requirements. They aren’t the most economical on the market, but they manage a brilliant 46.2 mpg combined for the little 3 door model.

What I did at this point was compare the more in depth understanding I had of the BMWs economy and green credentials with a couple of my other favourite car brands. This meant there were fewer crazy complicated terms flying around, and I could focus neatly on which gave me the best combination of looks and fuel saving cost saving tech.

Used BMW - How to Test Drive One

Driving a BMW is a little bit like learning all over again. By that I don’t mean that they are completely wildly different to every other car on the market – just that to me their drive and balance is a deliciously different experience to the other more generic cars on the market. I find that German cars in particular are worth paying extra for, as they drive beautifully whilst still retaining that attitude and drive that they are so renowned for.

Of course, knowing that you personally like BMWs doesn’t help you much in the car buying process. Sure, it may suggest an area of the market to start looking in, but it doesn’t make it any clearer whether you would be best suited to a smart little hatchback or a huge SUV. Would you prefer a convertible or a saloon? What sized wheels do you want, how much pull do you need. These, unfortunately, are the things that are inspired by your passion, but have to be followed up with plain old fashioned research.

Part of that research needs to be taking a few cars out for a test drive. This shouldn’t be reserved for your favourite model – you should take a selection out of differing brands so that you know exactly when thing to look out for and just what sort of car you prefer. This is the same whether you intend on buying a new or a used BMW – all cars need to be tested regardless of whether they are fresh off the production line!

To test drive a BMW, first do the obvious – book in at your local forecourt for a time, or walk in a try your luck to see if they can take you out in it there and then. As long as you are testing a new or used car from a dealership you should be insured, but always check your insurance if testing a private car – after all, the regulations for buying and selling in their market are pretty much nonexistent. They will also want to see your licence in order to drive it – so make sure you have it on you or it will be a wasted trip!

When you get in the BMW and start driving, you have to pay attention to plenty of things – especially so if you are trying out a used BMW not a new one. Pay attention to the breaks and suspension, noting any bumps and clonking noises, as well as how easily it changes gear. Any little annoying things you notice could reveal some terribly problems underneath, so don’t ignore them so as not to make a fuss.

BMWs feel different to other cars, in my humble opinion, so make sure to test out a few just to make sure you have a frame of reference. Here you want to be paying attention to personal likes and preferences – do you like light steering, or do you prefer a more determined wiggle? Either way could make a difference to whether you love your new car – or hate it!

Used Rolls Royce - The Phantom Drophead Coupe

The 2008 Phantom Drophead Coupe is a sight to behold. The Rolls Royce originally previewed at the Detroit Auto show in 2007, and the new version embodies the majority of the stylistic qualities of past Rolls Royce cars. Wooden surfaces cover almost the entire interior with a Chrome finish that may as well be a mirror, and leather seats that are beyond comfortable. I wouldn’t be surprised if you just sat in the convertible and didn’t bother driving. The exterior on the other hand is only really comparable to that of the Rolls Royce Phantom Sedan, merely because I have never seen another car like it. Of course it’s not exactly the same, there are definitive differences, particularly inside, where pretty much every surface is different to the Sedan and the coupe’s body length is significantly shorter than that of the Sedan, but nevertheless, the resemblance is uncanny. It’s striking how out of all the car manufacturers in the world, Rolls Royce still manage to create cars which are the embodiment of unique quality and luxury, over 100 years after they created their first car. Adding to its uniqueness is the soft cloth top, in a car world where the hard top is the norm, and its Chrome door handles, again mirror reminiscent. It amazes me how Rolls Royce cars are still handmade and perfectly carved. The only plastic you are likely to find in this car is the radio, and even that is bound to be a flash one.

In all honesty, the majority of us myself included who admire the cars introduced to the world by Rolls Royce will rarely be able to actually get in one unless you have a super nice friend with cash sticking out of their ears. But if you are lucky enough to be able to buy a Phantom second hand, not necessarily just the Drophead Coupe, it might take a while to get used to. The interior is stereotypically Rolls Royce, meaning the controls and gadgets are put somewhere completely unexpected in the Phantoms.

Nevertheless it would be a prize investment if you can buy one used. Phantoms within three years of being released drop their value by around 65 percent. While that is still a whopper number you’d be forking out; over the £100,000 mark, unless the person you are buying it off of is particularly generous or naive of what a luxury having one is, you know it would be worth it just from that first time you drive it down the high street, the Flying Lady flashing at the front, its presence causing stares from the neighbours and those wandering down the street, envious of how you got so lucky. The coupe’s presence is astounding even by Rolls Royce standards. Overall, I think it’s clear Rolls Royce don’t just manufacture cars, they craft them to the point that years later when being sold to you used and at a lower price, the quality is still not lost.

Used Rolls Royce - Buying a Used Phantom

The new Phantom’s have been described by Rolls-Royce as their car for the 21st Century. The name has been around since the early 20th century, having two series in Rolls 100 year history, but now they have updated the series for a modern market. Whether you’re a fan of the brand or not, you can’t help but admire the cars they produce. The Phantom’s have several types which cater to certain purposes; the Phantom, Phantom Family, Phantom Coupe, and the Drop Head Coupe, each similar but all different. The Phantom Coupe for example is driver orientated, with all the classic proportions you would expect of a classic Rolls-Royce, which concentrates on giving the driver a pure Royce experience, whereas the Drop head Coupe is a more relaxed interpretation of the classic design.

The Drophead Coupe pays homage to the classic J racing yachts of the 1930s, but Rolls has updated it for a motoring audience of today. In fact, the entire Phantom series is noticeable not just from the shapes, but from the coach doors.
You don’t have to watch from afar to appreciate the cars, and you don’t have to buy a Rolls Royce brand new to get to experience them first hand.

Used Rolls Royce - The Silver Sedan

If you’re one of the lucky folks who are able to afford a Rolls Royce brand new, then I don’t think you’ll care what I think. However if you’re like the rest of us and envy those who can, waiting for a used Royce to come up online that is within your price range, then you might be more receptive. The modern Rolls Royce Silver Sedan is a series of cars between 1998 and 2003, that in my opinion is even better than Rolls Royce more famous car series, Phantom, mainly because the Sedan is a little prettier. The model created for 2002 came at the end of the Sedan reign of production, so any problems that were originally identified will have been sorted by the time this one debuted in. As such it might be the Sedan that is worth having over the others in terms of reliability. Customers of Rolls Royce generally tick all the boxes when evaluating the car during the process of buying, until a new version of the same car comes out with improvements you didn’t realise they needed until you realised what aspects changed. Eight years down the line the 2002 Sedan would not be a disappointing investment.

Rolls Royce claims that despite the weight of the Seraph, the car can accelerate from nought to 60 mph in just 7 seconds, thanks to the help of BMW’s expertise in engines who invested in the series before taking over in 2003 when the Seraph series finally ended. It’s not the speed that impresses me however it’s how quiet the engine is. Rolls are known for the quiet, but even by their normal standard the smooth engine makes the journey far more relaxed, and easier to just sit back and talk to other passengers as you go. No shouting over anything here. The interior is your standard Rolls experience; dominated by polished wooden surfaces, your standard navigation system, power seats in the back and an abundance of space. If I was to pick holes in it I would say it’s a little too large; it’s roomy inside but externally I wouldn’t want to go down a narrow country lane. Not so much because I’d be worried for the Seraph but more fearful of damaging the other car. Then again it is a rarity to find a small Rolls Royce.

The Seraph debuted in 1998 at the whopper price of just over £150,000 and all the following Seraphs including 2002 maintained this original pricing. But nowadays having been around for basically a decade you can purchase one for as little as 60,000 if you’re lucky. Putting this into perspective this is double the amount my parents earn a year jointly, but it’s bound to be a reliable investment and being so young it wouldn’t be difficult for you to find parts for it should there be any difficulties down the line; Rolls Royce practically guarantees this, and haven’t let down. This is a Rolls Royce anyone could look good driving.
